From Addiction to Faith

When James arrived at the Durham Rescue Mission, he was estranged from his family, and with few friends, his options were limited. His battle for addiction recovery had already been a two-year challenge.

James received food and safe shelter, but most importantly, he received ongoing support for his addiction struggles. “To come here and see all the love that they show you and know God loves you and He forgives you…it was a life-changing event.”

At the height of his addiction and in his early stages of restoration, James admitted that he sometimes thought about suicide. In his previous program, a secular one, James says, “I was just there. I felt as though I was just existing.” But at the Durham Rescue Mission, he was able to reconnect to his faith. That’s because James was offered spiritual counseling and was able to attend worship services. He opened his heart and God made a miraculous change in his life—and it’s because of loyal partners like you who help keep our doors open.

When he sat down for his first hot meal at the Durham Rescue Mission, James knew this time it was going to be different. As everyone bowed their heads to pray, he was reminded of how meals felt at home with a loving family. “That was a really good sign for me. I had a sense that everything was going to be okay,” he says.

You help make a difference in the lives of people like James

Every gift means someone like James can experience safe shelter, nourishing meals, vocational training, spiritual counseling, recovery support, and Christian care. James humbly told us, “I’m so blessed they accepted me here.”

James recently graduated from our Victory Program, which helps people overcome addiction and rejoin the workforce. He’s so humbled and grateful. It’s because of compassionate friends like you that we can provide life-transforming programs.

Today, James works as a lead supervisor over eight other residents and aspires to become a staff member at the Durham Rescue Mission so he can further help other addicts. He makes sure everything runs smoothly but is never too busy to take time to encourage others to stay with the program.

“I tell them, ‘You need to stay…It will change you. It truly, truly will…”

Opening Hearts to Hope and Healing

Rob Tart

Brothers and Sisters,

As the joyous season of Easter approaches, there’s no better time to contemplate the life-changing, lifesaving power of Jesus’s Resurrection.

At the Durham Rescue Mission, we see His promises fulfilled daily in the lives of those who come to us broken, rejected, and often hopeless.

Healing starts with the kindness of a hot, nourishing meal or a safe place to sleep. But these first steps that bring comfort and build trust would be impossible without your support. For every lost and heartbroken soul who comes through our doors, we open our arms, ready to share His hope and spiritual healing.

In celebrating the redeeming love found in Christ, help us welcome the brokenhearted who need His love this Easter. Will you be the hands and feet of Jesus in their lives?

The Durham Rescue Mission exists because friends like you stand in faith with us. Thank you for your support and friendship. We praise God for His continued faithfulness!

Happy Easter and may God bless you,

Rev. Rob Tart
CEO/President

Her Long Walk of Faith

Clarissa arrived at our steps—barefoot, in pain, and broken.

Clarissa grew up in a home where abuse and addiction were common. When she left home, the abuse continued, this time with her husband. As she endured his cruelty for 28 years, Clarissa raised four children.

Mary

One night, after Clarissa had been beaten again, she prayed, “God, I believe in you. Please give me the strength to walk out.” Clarissa heard His answer, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee.” (Isaiah 41:10) In the morning, she left her house and walked for 18 hours straight.

Clarissa then met a police officer who took her to the hospital. She had internal bleeding from a ruptured kidney. A nurse told her, “I know a place you can go: the Durham Rescue Mission.”

Clarissa knew her prayer was answered: “I raised my hands, and I said, ‘Thank you, Jesus.’”

She walked through our doors—barefoot, in pain, and, in her words, “broken.” She was welcomed warmly by the staff, who provided her with a new pair of shoes, nourishing food, and safe shelter.

Weeks later, Clarissa asked a staff member about our Victory Program. “It allows you to get to know who your Savior Jesus Christ is,” the staff member said, then asked, “Are you saved?” Clarissa didn’t know for sure.

Today, Clarissa has a new testimony:

“Thank you to the donors who support the Mission for women like me and all who come through these doors. We need you. You don’t know how much you’ve impacted my life.”
